Yes, it's true. The team who have organised Papergirl Cardiff for the last two years are unable to organise Papergirl again this year due to other commitments.
However, we would love to see Papergirl Cardiff being organised by a different group of people, people with new ideas and fresh approaches.

The worldwide Papergirl movement is a fantastic network to be involved with, and distributing original artwork by bicycle to passers-by on the streets of Cardiff is definitely a experience to remember. So if you think you would like to take over the handlebars of Papergirl Cardiff, or would like to find out more about what it involves, then please get in touch - you'll find the email address below.PaperGirl Cardiffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04183052556908244944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6968866690399894937.post-61144676168113159372012-06-04T09:48:00.000+01:002012-06-04T09:48:28.877+01:00It's Papergirl Day!
Don't forget - sign up for the ride and join us today on our route around Cardiff giving out free art by bike!

There's so much fantastic work up for grabs - if you're not cycling, line the route (see our previous post) and wait for the riders to come by and give you a Papergirl roll of art!

If you get a roll, let us know! A lot of the artists have put their contact details on the back of their work, so if you want to get in touch with them to let them know you've received it, please do.

And whoever gets this drawing by Spike Dennis will have an extra link to a video of him creating it, just look on the back:
Between 12pm and 1pm we will hold a bike decorating workshop for you to dress your steeds approriately and Cardiff Cycle Workshop will be on hand for any last minute mechanical worries.

We will start at our exhibition venue The Printhaus and head into the city centre via Bute Park. This section will be on quite roads and cycle paths. After a short meet up in town, we will then continue towards Cardiff Bay along Working Street and The Hayes, it's sure to be busy here, so make sure you've kept some rolls in reserve! This is a designated shared use path and part of the Cardiff Council cycle network, so no problems in cycling here, but please remember that pedestrians have right of way!

From there we will ride all the way down Bute Street and onto Cardiff Bay itself - why should the shopping district get all the fun! Keep some art for this stretch too. This section will take place on the road, so please be courteous to other road users, and remember your highway code! A map can be found here. Children are of course welcome, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. The whole ride will last about an hour.

We will end up at The Waterguard pub, by the Norwegian Church for a well deserved drink!PaperGirl Cardiffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04183052556908244944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6968866690399894937.post-80409688587987491072012-05-29T10:43:00.001+01:002012-05-29T10:44:21.910+01:00Papergirl Cardiff ExhibitionYour chance to see all the lovely artwork that has been submitted to Papergirl Cardiff this year before it is distributed to the public by bicycle on Monday 4th of June. As announced on today's Roy Noble Show on BBC Wales, we are extending the submission deadline by another week! Following a number of emails and tweets from people worried that they wouldn't make the deadline, we have decided to add another week for people to get their artwork in. The more artwork submissions we get, the more people we can distribute artwork to and this means the distribution ride will be longer too - so more fun for everyone!
We can also confirm that the date of the distribution ride will be bank holiday Monday the 4th of June, so there may be a regal theme! If you would like to take part in the Papergirl Cardiff bike ride you can register by following the link on the left.PaperGirl Cardiffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04183052556908244944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6968866690399894937.post-2926224356744844422012-04-27T00:43:00.001+01:002012-04-27T00:46:52.043+01:00So what's it all about? This is one of our favourite Papergirl videos, from Papergirl Capetown. During this time all submitted artwork will be displayed to the public at The Printhaus print workshops on Llanfdaff Rd in Canton. Massive thanks to The Printhaus who have been hugely supportive of Papergirl Cardiff from the start and who are once again letting us use their excellent space as an exhibition venue, as well as running our print workshops for us!

So if you would like to have your work exhibited and then distributed to the lucky citizens of Cardiff, make sure you get some work into us by Friday 11th of May. Check out how you can submit artwork below or get in touch if you have any questions.

Last year we had over 300 pieces of artwork to distribute, which took a team of 30 cyclists about an hour to do. Those who took part said they wished the ride had been longer, so this year we need even more artwork! Handing out original pieces of artwork to passers-by is a lot of fun and a rewarding experience; likewise, giving a piece of work you have put effort and energy into to someone you don’t know and anticipating their reaction can be exciting. Why not give it a go?PaperGirl Cardiffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04183052556908244944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6968866690399894937.post-52253733896868009722012-03-26T10:46:00.001+01:002012-03-27T10:13:36.759+01:00Easter Workshop rescheduledThe print workshop we had planned for Easter has unfortunately had to be rescheduled. But do not fear, as we are now running it on Sunday 13th of May! This means it will be the 'Last Chance Saloon' for anyone who missed the May 11th deadline for submitting artwork.
The workshop will be aimed at ages 6-16 with an accompanying adult.
10am-1pm Poster Workshops (£2 per child)
2pm-5pm Bags and Tee Shirts Workshops (£5 per child)
Each participant will have a choice of four designs to enable them to create a Papergirl Cardiff poster, bag or t-shirt.
If you would like to book a place or have any questions about the workshop just email Sophie@theprinthaus.org

The morning session will run from 10am until 1pm and concentrate on screen printing posters. You will have the opportunity to design your own backgrounds and then print onto them, using pre-prepared screens. Paints and pencils will be available to use, but please feel free to bring any of your own materials too. This is an excellent introduction to the method and medium of printing. The cost of this session is £2 per child and £4 per adult. (If you're accompanying your kids you don't have to pay)

The afternoon session will run from 2pm to 5pm and print T-Shirts and bags. Using the same designs as before you will be able to make your very own tee's and tote bags to take away with you. The cost of this session is £5 per child and £7 per adult. To book a place on either of these workshops please email Sophie at The Printhaus on sophie@theprinthaus.org.
With planning for this year's event well under way I have been thinking back to what inspired me to do it in the first place and felt there was no better place to share those thoughts than here!

I came across an article about the Berlin chapter in the excellent Boneshaker magazine and was immediately taken in. It was off the wall, it was exciting, it was inclusive. It looked like great fun! I was searching for a way of promoting cycling here in the city that had a wider appeal than than the normal sponsored rides and commuter challenges (yawn!) and decided this was it. The thing that really appealed to me was that here was a cycling event which wasn't aimed specifically at cyclists. The cycling part actually ended up being quite a small part of the whole event, but no less successful for that.

The whole process of organising the event was a joy and I felt privileged to have been involved. A couple of things stood out for me really. The generosity of people in giving up their time and energy to create artwork for us to exhibit and give away was amazing. Time is precious, we all know that living in today's society. The fact that people had decided that creating something which could then be randomly given to someone else, was worth spending time on, made me very happy. The ride itself was a great afternoon. A more diverse group of cyclists would be hard to find, and that was one of the wonderful things about it. No roadie/fixie/commuter/eco tribalism here, just a bunch of people on bikes. Doing something for no other reason than it was fun to do. So different from my normal cycling experience. The recipients of the art were funny too, ranging from very grateful to totally confused!
Music, beer, food - a real party atmosphere courtesy of the Barenaked Beer Festival. Everyone got loaded up with several rolls of art, all packaged in newsprint and with a Papergirl stamp on them. After a mercifully short Health and Safety briefing we were ready to hit the road.

It was a great feeling to be out in the city as a large group of cyclists, not out of any political ideal or to try and prove a point, but just to try and have some fun. The people we met and passed seemed happy enough to see us and when we started to give out our pieces they were genuinely pleased. Somewhat non-plussed by the whole affair admittedly, but pleased nevertheless!

For me the greatest thing about the ride was the simple fact of doing something completely different on my bike. I normally get my cycling fun from pushing myself to the limit in races or dodging through the traffic. Papergirl was completely different, genteel by comparison, but so exciting. I felt exhilarated as we gathered at the top of Queen Street and gave ourselves a desrved round of applause. Roll on next year! Jon

We'd love to hear your thoughts about the ride too, and indeed the whole experience. If you'd like to write a post for this blog, please get in touch via e-mail, twitter or facebook. We look forward to hearing from you.PaperGirl Cardiffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04183052556908244944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6968866690399894937.post-66980800805941920802011-06-20T10:32:00.000+01:002011-06-20T10:32:55.204+01:00Papergirl - the art of giving artWhat a great day we had on Saturday! There was much excitement at The Printhaus on Saturday morning as the art was rolled up and prepared for the ride, and cyclists arrived to decorate their bikes in readiness.

Around 30 cyclists took part - and the rain cleared up just in time for us to have a sunny and joyful ride through Cardiff and give out art to the unsuspecting public! We had so many wonderful reactions to the art gifts, and we cannot thank enough all the artists who gave us their work, and all the cyclists who took part in the ride, making this first Welsh Papergirl project a resounding success.

We'd love to hear from you if you had any part in the project, and if you were someone who received some free art on Saturday - comment here on the blog, tweet, contact us on facebook, or email us - we want to know what you thought of it!

We'll be putting up photos very soon.

Thank you all so much, and see you all again next year!PaperGirl Cardiffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04183052556908244944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6968866690399894937.post-78552648895467980482011-06-18T08:49:00.002+01:002011-06-18T18:06:58.399+01:00It's Papergirl Day!It's here at last - today we are going out onto the streets of Cardiff to give away all the amazing free art sent to us! So a quick reminder - cyclists are leaving The Printhaus in Canton at 2pm to ride through Cardiff with rolls of art, and you could be the lucky recipient of an original piece of artwork. Don't forget to come out this afternoon and support Papergirl and join in the fun - you could end up with something beautiful to take home!

We'll be finishing near to Cardiff Castle around 3pm, and everyone is welcome to return with us to The Printhaus who are hosting the Artisan Beer Company's Micro Beer Festival today till 9pm.

See you there - and if you are given some art by us, email, tweet or comment on our blog - and send us a picture!
