It's Papergirl Day!

Don't forget - sign up for the ride and join us today on our route around Cardiff giving out free art by bike!

There's so much fantastic work up for grabs - if you're not cycling, line the route (see our previous post) and wait for the riders to come by and give you a Papergirl roll of art!

If you get a roll, let us know!  A lot of the artists have put their contact details on the back of their work, so if you want to get in touch with them to let them know you've received it, please do.

And whoever gets this drawing by Spike Dennis will have an extra link to a video of him creating it, just look on the back:

Thanks again to all the artists who have contributed their work this year and to the cyclists who will give out the work today.  Join us in the bay to celebrate Papergirl Cardiff Day 2012!

Ride Details Announced.

This year's distribution ride will take place on Monday 4th June at 1pm, give or take a few minutes! Between 12pm and 1pm we will hold a bike decorating workshop for you to dress your steeds approriately and Cardiff Cycle Workshop will be on hand for any last minute mechanical worries.

We will start at our exhibition venue The Printhaus and head into the city centre via Bute Park. This section will be on quite roads and cycle paths. After a short meet up in town, we will then continue towards Cardiff Bay along Working Street and The Hayes, it's sure to be busy here, so make sure you've kept some rolls in reserve! This is a designated shared use path and part of the Cardiff Council cycle network, so no problems in cycling here, but please remember that pedestrians have right of way!

From there we will ride all the way down Bute Street and onto Cardiff Bay itself - why should the shopping district get all the fun! Keep some art for this stretch too. This section will take place on the road, so please be courteous to other road users, and remember your highway code! A map can be found here. Children are of course welcome, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. The whole ride will last about an hour.

We will end up at The Waterguard pub, by the Norwegian Church for a well deserved drink!

Submission deadline extended!!!

As announced on today's Roy Noble Show on BBC Wales, we are extending the submission deadline by another week! Following a number of emails and tweets from people worried that they wouldn't make the deadline, we have decided to add another week for people to get their artwork in. The more artwork submissions we get, the more people we can distribute artwork to and this means the distribution ride will be longer too - so more fun for everyone!
We can also confirm that the date of the distribution ride will be bank holiday Monday the 4th of June, so there may be a regal theme! If you would like to take part in the Papergirl Cardiff bike ride you can register by following the link on the left.

This is one of our favourite Papergirl videos, from Papergirl Capetown. We think it captures perfectly what Papergirl is all about!

Exhibition dates announced

We are really pleased to finally reveal the dates of the Papergirl artwork exhibition - Saturday 26th of May to Saturday 2nd of June. During this time all submitted artwork will be displayed to the public at The Printhaus print workshops on Llanfdaff Rd in Canton. Massive thanks to The Printhaus who have been hugely supportive of Papergirl Cardiff from the start and who are once again letting us use their excellent space as an exhibition venue, as well as running our print workshops for us!

So if you would like to have your work exhibited and then distributed to the lucky citizens of Cardiff, make sure you get some work into us by Friday 11th of May. Check out how you can submit artwork below or get in touch if you have any questions.

Last year we had over 300 pieces of artwork to distribute, which took a team of 30 cyclists about an hour to do. Those who took part said they wished the ride had been longer, so this year we need even more artwork! Handing out original pieces of artwork to passers-by is a lot of fun and a rewarding experience; likewise, giving a piece of work you have put effort and energy into to someone you don’t know and anticipating their reaction can be exciting. Why not give it a go?

Easter Workshops.

If you'd like to submit some work for this year's event but missed the last printmaking workshops at The Printhaus, don't worry, on Tuesday 10th April we'll be holding more!

The morning session will run from 10am until 1pm and concentrate on screen printing posters. You will have the opportunity to design your own backgrounds and then print onto them, using pre-prepared screens. Paints and pencils will be available to use, but please feel free to bring any of your own materials too. This is an excellent introduction to the method and medium of printing. The cost of this session is £2 per child and £4 per adult. (If you're accompanying your kids you don't have to pay)

The afternoon session will run from 2pm to 5pm and print T-Shirts and bags. Using the same designs as before you will be able to make your very own tee's and tote bags to take away with you. The cost of this session is £5 per child and £7 per adult. To book a place on either of these workshops please email Sophie at The Printhaus on sophie@theprinthaus.org.

We had some fantastic feedback from our last workshops and some fantastic posters were made. It's a great way to have a fun, creative morning or afternoon and make some art for Papergirl Cardiff 2012 too. I'm looking forward to it; already got a little collage type piece in mind for my poster! Hope to see you there.

"Hi there papergirl

We just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that we thought the workshop was terrific! It was a wonderfully creative afternoon, enabling us to learn some great new printing techniques.  The bag and T.shirt turned out brilliantly and it was great to have something to take away at the end of the session.

Thank you so much for letting us know about your event and what a bargain it was too.  We are looking forward to your next workshop, April 10th and will definitely spread the word amongst our pals.

Kindest regards
Helen & George (aged 3 3/4)

Why Papergirl?

One of my highlights of 2011 was being involved in organising Papergirl Cardiff. With planning for this year's event well under way I have been thinking back to what inspired me to do it in the first place and felt there was no better place to share those thoughts than here!

I came across an article about the Berlin chapter in the excellent Boneshaker magazine and was immediately taken in. It was off the wall, it  was exciting, it was inclusive. It looked like great fun! I was searching for a way of promoting cycling here in the city that had a wider appeal than than the normal sponsored rides and commuter challenges (yawn!) and decided this was it. The thing that really appealed to me was that here was a cycling event which wasn't aimed specifically at cyclists. The cycling part actually ended up being quite a small part of the whole event, but no less successful for that.

The whole process of organising the event was a joy and I felt privileged to have been involved.  A couple of things stood out for me really. The generosity of people in giving up their time and energy to create artwork for us to exhibit and give away was amazing. Time is precious, we all know that living in today's society. The fact that people had decided that creating something which could then be randomly given to someone else, was worth spending time on, made me very happy.  The ride itself was a great afternoon. A more diverse group of cyclists would be hard to find, and that was one of the wonderful things about it. No roadie/fixie/commuter/eco tribalism here, just a bunch of people on bikes. Doing something for no other reason than it was fun to do. So different from my normal cycling experience. The recipients of the art were funny too, ranging from very grateful to totally confused!

Submissions for Papergirl Cardiff 2012 are open now!
